Calculating exact age looks trivial — subtract birth date from today — but the precision required to give correct years, months and days simultaneously rests on three independent calendar mechanisms that the calculator handles internally. The first is the Gregorian leap-year rule, codified in the Inter Gravissimas papal bull of 1582 and preserved unchanged in ISO 8601 (the international standard for representation of dates and times): a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except if divisible by 100, except if divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 2100 will not be, 2400 will be again. February has 29 days in those years and 28 in the others. The second is the variable length of months: 31 days for January, March, May, July, August, October, December; 30 for April, June, September, November; 28 or 29 for February. The third is the calendar's drift through weekday cycles, irrelevant for age but relevant if you want the day of the week the user was born — Zeller's Congruence (1882) gives that in O(1) arithmetic without table lookups.

The standard algorithm proceeds in three subtractions. First, years: years_diff = today.year − birth.year, then decrement by one if (today.month, today.day) precedes (birth.month, birth.day) in the calendar. Second, months: if today.month >= birth.month and today.day >= birth.day, months_remaining = today.month − birth.month; if today.month < birth.month, months_remaining = 12 − birth.month + today.month, with appropriate day adjustment. Third, days: residual_days, computed by subtracting birth.day from today.day, borrowing from the previous month's day count if today.day < birth.day. Total days lived is computed independently as Julian Day Number (JDN) of today minus JDN of birth — JDN is the count of days since 1 January 4713 BC in the proleptic Julian calendar, defined for astronomical use by the IAU and used internally by virtually every date library because it reduces date arithmetic to plain integer arithmetic. The two computations cross-check each other.

Civil-law definitions of when a person 'turns N' diverge surprisingly across jurisdictions. Most of the world follows what international comparative law calls the Western convention: a person turns N at midnight local time on the N-th anniversary of their birth date — for someone born 15 June 2008, they reach legal age 18 at the start of 15 June 2026. Romanian Codul Civil (Lege 287/2009) art. 38 codifies this for legal majority. Hungarian Polgári Törvénykönyv (2013. évi V. tv.) § 2:9 defines majority at the completion of the 18th year. Spanish Código Civil art. 315 defines majority at 18 years of age. Germany's BGB § 2 specifies that majority is reached at the completion of the 18th year of life ('Vollendung des 18. Lebensjahres'), with subtle implications for someone born on 29 February: the courts have settled on the day before the corresponding non-leap birthday as the legal majority moment. France's Code civil art. 414, Polish Kodeks cywilny art. 10, and Dutch BW art. 1:233 follow the same Western convention. East Asian traditional age-reckoning systems — still socially relevant in Korea, partly retained in Japan and parts of China — differ: a person is born at age 1 and gains a year each Lunar New Year, so a baby born in December can be 'two years old' by late January. The calculator computes Western chronological age and adds an option to display the East Asian age for users who need it.

Time zones add a subtle layer. International civil aviation, customs, and many cross-border legal documents use the local time of the place where the event occurred, but online forms ambiguously oscillate between user-local time, server time, and UTC. The calculator defaults to the user's local time as reported by the browser (Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone), and exposes a UTC option for documents like passport renewals or international visa applications where the issuing authority specifies UTC. The US Naval Observatory and IERS (International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service) maintain the authoritative time signal that all civil time zones derive from via the IANA tz database. Daylight saving transitions are handled correctly by the underlying date library; an age computation crossing a DST shift is unaffected because a year is a year regardless of whether two of its days are short or long.

Legal age thresholds vary by jurisdiction and purpose, and chronological age computed by this calculator is the necessary baseline for nearly all of them, but rarely the exact trigger. Voting in EU member states is age 18 (TFEU art. 22) — same in the US, Brazil and most of the world, lowered to 16 in Austria for federal elections and in Brazil optional from 16. Driving licence age varies: 16 in much of the US, 17 in the UK, 17–18 in most EU countries (driving licence directive 2006/126/EC), 18 in Brazil. Drinking age: 18 in most of Europe, 21 in the US, 19 in some US states. Retirement / state pension age has been climbing across the OECD and now ranges 62–67 (with reform schedules pushing it higher, e.g. France retraite légale 64 from 2030, Germany 67 by 2031). Criminal-responsibility ages differ even more widely: 10 in England and Wales, 12 in the Netherlands, 14 in Germany and Italy, 16 in Spain, 18 in Brazil with reduced regimes from 12.
